Good afternoon,

I hope all is well with you and that your summer has gotten off to a great start. I want to take the opportunity to reach out to you regarding some changes that will be coming our way this fall. As you may or may not be aware, Mr. James announced his retirement last week. I apologize for the delay in my correspondence; however, it is very important to me that you are receiving accurate information and thoughtful responses to the many questions you and your families may have concerning the future of the LCHS Band Department.

Although I understand Mr. James’ decision to retire from LC at this time, I am disappointed that our students did not receive the closure they deserve in this process. Mr. James has been a pillar of the performing arts community in Lawrence for over twenty five years. In recent years, he has been the single most consistent face in a performing arts department that has gone through several personnel changes. Now more than ever it is important that our students have a leader who is sensitive to this reality and is able to help them regain a sense of trust and stability in leadership. I have spent much of the past week reflecting on how I can best lead us through the coming situation as smoothly as possible, and I would be remiss if I did not begin by articulating my intent for our students going forward.

My number one priority has always been and will continue to be the wellbeing of our students. I have been working closely with my fellow performing arts colleagues and our administration to ensure that our students’ success and wellbeing is at the core of all decisions being made as we transition into this new chapter. I have spent the majority of this past week aggressively pursuing some of the strongest teachers and musicians in our field across the country to fill this vacancy with a great co-director in a timely fashion. Although this year will come along with many challenges, I am incredibly excited about the prospects of our future together. In the coming years, I believe wholeheartedly that we will succeed in building a culture that better serves our students while maintaining the integrity of high quality performance experiences and opportunities for all of our children.

That said, there is much work to be done. Please see the attached document regarding upcoming meetings and events involving Marching Band, and volunteer opportunities. I look forward to seeing you soon.
